Veterinary marketing: 10 reasons your Google Maps profile is costing you new clients and their pets

When someone nearby searches vet near me or emergency vet, Google usually shows three veterinary clinics on a map before any website. Good veterinary marketing, or veterinary SEO, starts with that listing. Here is what we find on veterinary clinics' Google profiles, and what we do about each problem.

  • One business of each type per area
  • No contract
  • Nothing changes without your approval

10 veterinary marketing mistakes on Google Maps, and what we do about each

  1. Your primary category is not Veterinarian.

Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you show up for. A veterinary clinic filed under Pet groomer or another animal category can miss searches like vet near me and emergency vet, which are where most new clients and their pets come from.

What we do: we compare your categories with the veterinary clinics that win your map, set the best fit as primary and add secondary categories only where they fit, after you approve.

  2. Your services list is empty or too short.

People search for specific things: wellness exams, vaccinations, dental cleanings, surgery, urgent care, exotic pet care and boarding. In veterinary marketing, a services list that names only your main category gives Google little to match those searches against.

What we do: we build a clean services list from what you actually offer, with a short plain line for each, and leave off anything you do not want calls for.

  3. Your pin, address or entrance details are off.

Google ranks you partly by how close you are to the person searching, so the pin has to sit on your real door. Suite numbers, shared buildings and back entrances confuse customers and Google alike, and a pin in the wrong spot can cost you nearby searches.

What we do: we check where Google places your pin, fix the address and suite details after you approve and add photos of your entrance so first time visitors find you.

  4. There is no appointment request link on the map.

Google lets you add links so people can request an appointment right from your profile. When that takes one tap, fewer people move on to a competitor or wait until later.

What we do: we add and test your appointment request link and website link, and check them every week so they never break.

  5. Your photos are old, few or not yours.

The photos that win new clients and their pets show your exam rooms, your team with patients, the waiting area and the entrance. A profile with a logo and a few old pictures looks like a business that may not be open.

What we do: we publish one post a week with up to three of your own photos, written for the towns you want and approved by you before it goes live.

  6. Reviews come in bursts, then stop.

Google weighs how many reviews you have, how recent they are and your rating. For veterinary clinics, the best time to ask is after a good visit, by text. A steady flow beats a big push once a year.

What we do: we set up a simple way to ask with your review link and help you build it into your routine.

  7. Reviews sit there with no reply.

People choosing between you and a competitor read your replies, especially to complaints. Calm, short answers show how you treat people.

What we do: we draft a reply to every new review in your voice, including careful replies to complaints, and post it only after you approve it.

  8. Your hours on Google do not match reality.

Pet owners search at night when something goes wrong. If you are not an emergency clinic, say so clearly and point them to one, so the review does not blame you.

What we do: we set regular and holiday hours with you, and can set up an AI receptionist that answers calls you miss, day or night.

  9. Emergency and urgent care searches need clear answers.

People with a sick pet at night search emergency vet. If you offer urgent care during the day, list it. If you do not handle emergencies, your hours and description should make that plain.

What we do: we set hours and services so Google shows the right clinic for the right search, and draft calm replies to emotional reviews for your approval.

  10. Nobody checks the map or the profile.

Most veterinary clinics do not know where they show up a few miles away, and Google or the public can suggest edits that go live without notice. A wrong phone number or changed hours can cost weeks of new clients and their pets before anyone spots it.

What we do: we run a weekly profile check that catches unwanted changes and a 49 point map scan of your area every month, showing green where you are in the top 3 and red where you are not.

Proof

What we often find on veterinary clinics' listings, and what we have fixed in other trades

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.

A pattern we see often: a vet clinic with both an animal hospital and a veterinarian profile, splitting reviews.
A pattern we see often: exotic pet or cat only care not listed, even though those owners search for it by name.
A pattern we see often: painful reviews after a pet loss left with no reply.
A house cleaning company in Southern California with more than 170 reviews at 5.0. Our scan found it at none of 49 points, while a competitor with 1 review reached the top 3 at 5. Great reviews could not make up for the profile setup.
An appliance repair and HVAC company in Utah with more than 250 reviews at 5.0 ranked only 10th at its own address. We traced it to a shared coworking address, switched it to a service area business with 20 towns and advised against opening a second profile that could risk a suspension.
A locksmith in Southern California had no Google profile, so it appeared at 0 of 49 points. We coached the owner through Google's video verification, and a rescan on the same grid found it at 30 of 49 points and in the top 3 at 10.

Every business and market is different. We do not promise rankings. We show you the same map every month so you can see what changed.
