Google Business Profile categories: 10 rules for choosing the right ones

Your Google Business Profile categories tell Google what searches you belong in. The wrong primary category can keep a business off the map no matter how many reviews it has. Here is how to choose, how many to use, and a short Google business categories list for home service trades, with real category mistakes we have found.

10 Google Business Profile category mistakes, and what we do about each

A business owner comparing listings on a laptop in a home office
  1. The primary category matters most.

Google lets you pick one primary category, and it is one of the strongest signals for which searches you show up in. Pick the one that best matches the main work you want calls for, not everything you do.

What we do: we compare your primary category with the businesses that win your map and recommend the best fit for the work you want.

  2. You can add up to 9 secondary categories.

Google Business Profile categories allow one primary plus up to 9 additional ones. Secondary categories should cover real services you offer, like a plumber adding water heater installation service.

What we do: we add only the secondary categories that match work you actually do and want more of.

  3. More categories is not always better.

Piling on loosely related categories can blur what Google thinks you are. We have scanned a fire and water restoration company with 8 categories, including kitchen remodeler, that reached the top 3 nowhere.

What we do: we trim categories that do not match your work and keep the list focused.

  4. You have to pick from Google's list.

You cannot type your own category. Google keeps a list of several thousand, and you choose from the suggestions that appear as you type. If your exact trade is missing, pick the closest specific one, not a generic one.

What we do: we search Google's categories list for the most specific match for each service you offer.

  5. Generic categories bury you.

Categories like contractor, consultant or service establishment tell Google very little. A fence company we found filed under consultant did not show on the map at all.

What we do: we replace vague categories with specific ones for your trade after you approve the change.

  6. A wrong category often comes from the past.

Many owners never chose their category. Google or an old employee set it, or the business changed what it does. We often find roofers listed as window installation and cleaners listed as vacation home rental agency.

What we do: we review every category on your profile in the first scan and flag any that do not fit.

  7. Here is a short list of common home service categories.

Examples from Google's list include Plumber, Electrician, Roofing contractor, HVAC contractor, Landscaper, Lawn care service, House cleaning service, Carpet cleaning service, Pressure washing service, Moving company, Junk removal service, Locksmith, Painter, Tree service, Pest control service, Fence contractor and Water damage restoration service. Check the exact wording in your profile, because the list changes.

What we do: we match each of your services to the closest category Google offers and confirm it shows on your live profile.

  8. Categories unlock features.

Some categories bring their own features, like suggested services, booking options or attributes. A wrong category can hide the options customers expect to see for your trade.

What we do: we fill in the services and attributes your categories unlock, so the profile looks complete.

  9. Changing the primary category can trigger a review.

A big change to the primary category can send the profile through a review or reverification, and rankings can move for a few weeks while Google adjusts.

What we do: we plan category changes with you, make them one at a time after you approve them and watch the map closely afterward.

  10. Check categories against the map, not a guess.

The best way to see whether your categories work is to look at where you rank across your whole service area, then compare with the businesses that win.

What we do: we run a 49 point map scan before any change and the same 49 points every month after.

Category mistakes we have found on real profiles

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.

A roofing company in Omaha had its primary category set to window installation. It reached the top 3 at 1 of 49 points and was absent across the west side of the metro.
A residential cleaning company in Nashville did not appear at any of 49 points. Its primary category was vacation home rental agency.
A Mississippi moving company with 129 reviews had its main category set to Warehouse. It reached the top 3 at just 1 of 49 points, while a competitor held the top 3 at 36.
A fence and deck company in Missouri did not appear on the map at all because its profile was filed under the category consultant.
A plumbing company in New York City had its primary category set to heating contractor instead of plumber, and its listing showed as unclaimed.
A fire and water restoration company in Silicon Valley reached the top 3 at none of 49 points. Its listing carried 8 categories, including kitchen remodeler, and showed weekday office hours even though its crew responds around the clock.

Every business and market is different. We do not promise rankings. We show you the same map every month so you can see what changed.
