Someone changed my Google Business listing: 10 steps to fix it and stop it happening again

Your hours, phone number, category or even your name can change without you touching anything. Customers and Google's own systems can suggest edits, and Google now gives you only 4 days to reject them. Here is how to fix a wrong change and protect the listing.

10 steps when your Google Business listing changed without you

Contractor reviewing his business listing on a phone
  1. Know who can change your listing.

Anyone can suggest an edit to a business on Google Maps. Google can also update details on its own from other sources, such as your website or directories.

What we do: we check where each change came from before we fix it.

  2. Find the change in your profile.

Signed in as the owner, open your Business Profile. Google marks updates it made or that the public suggested, and lets you review them.

What we do: we review every pending and applied update on your profile.

  3. Act within 4 days.

Once you are notified of a suggested edit, Google gives you 4 days to accept or reject it. If you do nothing, Google may publish it when other public information supports it.

What we do: our weekly profile check catches suggested edits and we flag them to you right away.

  4. Reject or correct the wrong detail.

Reject the suggestion, or edit the field back to the correct value. Keep it accurate and simple.

What we do: we correct the detail on your profile once you approve it.

  5. Fix your website too.

If your website still shows old hours or an old phone number, Google can use it to support a wrong edit. The website and the profile should say the same thing.

What we do: we compare your website with your profile and tell you what to update.

  6. Clean up directories with old details.

Old details on Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps and industry sites can feed wrong edits back into Google.

What we do: we correct your details across the main directories.

    Business listings and citations
  7. Turn on notifications.

Make sure Business Profile emails go to an inbox someone actually reads, so you hear about edits in time.

What we do: we help you set up notifications and get alerts on your behalf as a manager.

  8. Check your category and name especially.

A changed primary category can drop you out of the searches that matter, and a changed name can trigger a review. These two are worth checking first.

What we do: we watch the category and name every week.

  9. Do not fight it with keyword stuffing.

Adding keywords to your name to undo a change, or making many edits at once, can trigger a suspension.

What we do: we keep changes small, accurate and approved by you.

  10. Check the map after a change.

A wrong category, pin or phone number can move your map position quickly. A rescan shows whether it did.

What we do: we rescan your map on the same 49 points when something important changes.

Proof

Real profile protection work

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.

When a painting client saw a dip in his website analytics, we rescanned the map the same day and showed him with his own numbers that his map position had held, so nothing got undone in a panic.
A garage door company in South Jersey did not appear at any of 49 points for garage door repair when we scanned it. Its listing had no garage door category and showed as unclaimed.
A pressure washing company in Central Texas. We removed a house cleaning category for work it does not do, added an emergency spill cleanup service and rewrote a description that had been copied from another service. Every change was applied after the owner approved it in writing.
A painting contractor in Florida with hundreds of reviews. We cut 106 service entries down to 37, replaced a description that was cut off at Google's 750 character limit and cleaned up duplicate and ZIP code service areas. The owner gets a dated change log every month.
A carpet cleaning company in central Mississippi. Our scan found its listing placed by Google in Kentucky, about 400 miles away. It reached the top 3 at none of 49 points.
A chimney company in New Hampshire still ranked around its old address four years after moving when we scanned it, and its listing showed as unclaimed.

Every business and market is different. We do not promise rankings. We show you the same map every month so you can see what changed.
