Google Business Profile suspended: 10 steps to get it back and keep it

A suspended profile can disappear from Google Maps overnight, and the phone goes quiet. Most suspensions come from a handful of fixable problems. Here is what causes them, how to request reinstatement and what to avoid while you wait.

10 steps when your Google Business Profile is suspended

  1. Find out what kind of suspension it is.

In some cases you lose access to manage the profile but it still shows. In others the profile is removed from Maps entirely. Google usually shows a notice in your Business Profile explaining the restriction.

What we do: we check the profile status and tell you exactly what Google has restricted.

  2. Do not create a new profile.

Opening a second profile to get around a suspension is one of the fastest ways to make things worse, and it can get both profiles suspended.

What we do: we keep you on the original profile and work through Google's process.

  3. Check the business name for extra words.

Adding cities, services or slogans to the name, like "Best Plumber Dallas", is a common trigger. Your Google name should match your real signage and paperwork.

What we do: we compare your Google name with your real business name and fix it before you appeal.

  4. Check the address.

Virtual offices, PO boxes, coworking desks and home addresses shown publicly for service businesses can all lead to a suspension.

What we do: we decide with you whether you should show a storefront address or hide it and list your service area instead.

  5. Look for duplicate profiles.

Two profiles for the same business at the same place can trigger a suspension of one or both.

What we do: we search for duplicates and help you request that Google merge or remove them.

  6. Review recent edits.

A change to the name, address, category or website just before the suspension is often the cause, whether you made it or Google accepted a suggested edit.

What we do: we look at the profile history and what Google changed, so we know what to undo.

  7. Gather your proof before you appeal.

Google asks for evidence that the business is real and operates where you say: a business license, utility bill or registration, photos of your sign, your vehicle with your business name, your tools or your storefront.

What we do: we give you a checklist for your trade and review your proof before anything is sent.

  8. Submit one reinstatement request.

Google's reinstatement form lets you explain and upload evidence. Filing several requests for the same profile can slow things down.

What we do: we help you write a clear, short explanation that matches your evidence.

  9. Wait without editing.

Changing the profile while the request is reviewed can reset the process. Reviews often take a few days, and sometimes longer.

What we do: we check the status for you and tell you as soon as Google answers.

  10. Protect it after it comes back.

Once reinstated, keep the name clean, watch for suggested edits and avoid big changes all at once.

What we do: our weekly profile check catches changes Google or anyone else makes, and we flag anything risky before it becomes a problem.

Real profile cleanup and protection work

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.

An appliance repair and HVAC company in Utah with more than 250 reviews at 5.0 ranked only 10th at its own address. We traced it to a shared coworking address, switched it to a service area business with 20 towns and advised against opening a second profile that could risk a suspension.
A painting contractor in Florida with hundreds of reviews. We cut 106 service entries down to 37, replaced a description that was cut off at Google's 750 character limit and cleaned up duplicate and ZIP code service areas. The owner gets a dated change log every month.
A chimney company in New Hampshire still ranked around its old address four years after moving when we scanned it, and its listing showed as unclaimed.
A moving company in Northern Virginia did not show up at any of 49 search points around its town. Its only listing was placed in Tennessee and filed under a generic category.
A pressure washing company in Central Texas. We removed a house cleaning category for work it does not do, added an emergency spill cleanup service and rewrote a description that had been copied from another service. Every change was applied after the owner approved it in writing.
A locksmith in Southern California had no Google profile, so it appeared at 0 of 49 points. We coached the owner through Google's video verification, and a rescan on the same grid found it at 30 of 49 points and in the top 3 at 10.

Every business and market is different. We do not promise rankings. We show you the same map every month so you can see what changed.
