How to change business address on Google: 10 things to get right when you move
Moving your business, or fixing an old address, is a simple edit in your Google Business Profile. Getting it wrong can trigger reverification, split your reviews or leave customers driving to your old shop. Here is how to change business address on Google Maps the right way, with real address problems we have found on profiles we scan.
- One business of each type per area
- No contract
- Nothing changes without your approval

10 ways a Google Business Profile address change goes wrong, and what we do about each

Edit the profile you have, do not start a new one.
To update the address on your Google Business Profile, open your profile from Google Search or Maps, choose Edit profile, then Business information and Location. Editing the existing profile keeps your reviews, photos and history. Creating a new profile for the new address starts you from zero and leaves a duplicate behind.
What we do: we make the address change on your existing profile after you approve it, so your reviews and history move with you.
Decide first if you are a storefront or a service area business.
If customers come to you, Google wants a real address with your sign on it. If you go to customers, like most plumbers, cleaners and roofers, Google usually wants you to hide the address and list the towns you serve instead. Many moves are a good time to fix this choice.
What we do: we look at how you actually work, recommend storefront, service area or both, and set it up the way Google's rules expect.
How a service area business should set up its Google profileExpect Google to ask you to verify again.
Changing the address is one of the edits that can send a profile back through verification. Google may ask for a video showing your sign, your vehicle, your tools and proof you manage the business. Until it clears, the edit can sit pending or the profile can drop from the map.
What we do: we tell you exactly what Google usually wants to see on video, help you plan the recording and stay with you until the new address is live.
Never use a virtual office, PO box or shared desk.
Google does not allow PO boxes or virtual offices as a business location, and shared coworking addresses often cause ranking and suspension trouble. If your new space is one of these, use a service area setup with the address hidden instead.
What we do: we check the new address against Google's guidelines before anything changes, and switch you to a service area setup when the address will not hold up.
Check the pin, not just the street address.
Google places a pin from your address, and sometimes it lands on the wrong building, the wrong town or even the wrong state. Distance matters a lot on Google Maps, so a misplaced pin quietly costs you calls near your real location.
What we do: we confirm the pin on the live map after the change and correct it if Google placed you in the wrong spot.
Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere.
Your name, address and phone number, often called NAP, should match across Google, your website, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing and industry directories. Mixed old and new addresses make it harder for Google to trust which one is right.
What we do: we list every place your old address still shows and update them in your citations work so the details match.
Update your website the same day.
Your website footer, contact page, location pages and any map embed should show the new address when you change business address on Google. If your site has local business schema, the address in the code needs to change too.
What we do: we give you or your web person a short list of every spot on the site that needs the new address, written out exactly.
Expect your map rankings to shift.
Google Maps weighs how close a business is to the person searching. Moving even a few miles can lift you in some towns and drop you in others. That is normal, and it is why you need to see the whole service area, not just the search from your desk.
What we do: we run a 49 point map scan before the move and the same 49 points after, so you can see where your position changed.
Mark the old location as moved if it is still listed.
If a separate listing still sits at your old address, customers may find it and call a dead end, and its reviews are not helping your current profile. You can ask Google to mark the old listing as moved or closed, or merge it if it is a duplicate.
What we do: we find old and duplicate listings, show you which one to keep and help you request that Google mark, merge or remove the rest.
Watch the profile for weeks after the move.
Google and the public can suggest edits, and an old address sometimes reappears from outside data sources. Address changes can also take several days to go live while Google reviews them.
What we do: we run a weekly profile check that catches an old address, phone or hours coming back, and fix it with your approval.

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.
