General contractor marketing

General contractor marketing: 10 fixes that bring in more project calls

In our scans, general contractors struggle on Google Maps more than almost any trade we check. Good general contractor marketing starts with being found when a homeowner nearby searches for a contractor. Here are 10 fixes we work through, and why your own map beats bought leads for lead generation for contractors.

  • One business of each type per area
  • No contract
  • Nothing changes without your approval

10 contractor marketing problems that cost general contractors jobs, and what we do about each

Contractor reviewing a map scan on a tablet at a job site
  1. Your primary category is too vague or too narrow.

Google offers categories like General contractor, Construction company and Remodeler. Picking one that does not match the projects you want can leave you out of the searches that bring those jobs.

What we do: we compare your categories with the contractors who win your map and choose the primary and secondary categories that match your work, applied only after you approve.

  2. Your services list does not show what you build.

Each service is its own search. A general contractor profile with no services, or one line that says "construction", leaves Google guessing whether you do additions, kitchens, decks or commercial build outs.

What we do: we build a clean list of the projects you actually take on and leave off the work you do not want calls for.

  3. You are set up as a storefront when you work at the job site.

Most general contractors work at the customer's property. A profile tied to a home address or shared office can show you in the wrong place, and Google usually expects a service area business to hide its address.

What we do: we set you up as a service area business when that fits, build a list of up to 20 towns you want work from and confirm it on the live map.

  4. Bought leads are shared leads.

Many lead generation for contractors sites sell the same homeowner to several contractors at once, and you are racing on price before you ever see the job. Calls from your own Google profile come to you alone.

What we do: we focus on your Google Business Profile and map ranking, so the calls come straight from homeowners who searched for you.

  5. Your project photos are old or missing.

Homeowners hiring for a big project want to see finished work. A profile with three old photos tells them very little, even if your work is great.

What we do: we publish one post a week with up to three photos from your projects, written for the towns you want and approved by you.

  6. Your reviews do not mention the work.

A review that says "great job" helps less than one that names the kitchen remodel or the addition and the town. You can ask happy clients to mention the project, as long as you do not tell them what to say.

What we do: we suggest a reply to every new review in your voice, post it only after you approve it and help you set up a simple way to ask for reviews.

  7. Your license and insurance are hard to find.

Homeowners checking contractors look for a license number and proof of insurance, and many states require a license number in contractor advertising. Burying it costs you trust on big projects.

What we do: we add your license details to your description where they fit Google's rules and make sure your profile tells customers what they need to hire you.

  8. Your website and profile tell different stories.

Your website should match your profile on name, phone, services and towns. Contractor marketing works best when every place a homeowner looks says the same thing.

What we do: we check that your website link, services and towns line up with your profile and tell you what to fix on the site.

  9. Your listings across the web are out of date.

General contractors often move offices or change phone numbers over the years. Old details on directories and builder sites can send customers to the wrong place.

What we do: we build and clean up your citations, so your business details match across the listings that matter.

  10. You only check your ranking from the office.

A search from your desk shows where you rank at your desk. Most general contractors are missing across big parts of their service area and never know it.

What we do: we run a 49 point Google Maps scan before we start and rescan the same points every month, so you see exactly where you are in the top 3.

Proof

What contractor profiles look like before we fix them

We sign mutual NDAs with our clients, so we describe the work instead of naming the business.

In our scans of 27 general contractors, 59% did not reach the top 3 at any of 49 points.
In our scans of 532 local businesses, 32% did not reach the top 3 at any of 49 points and the median business reached it at just 1 of 49.
A painting contractor in Florida with hundreds of reviews. We cut 106 service entries down to 37, replaced a description that was cut off at Google's 750 character limit and cleaned up duplicate and ZIP code service areas. The owner gets a dated change log every month.
A custom tile company in Utah had its listing pinned in a different county from where it works, with kitchen remodeler as its category. It showed up at only 2 of 49 points.
An appliance repair and HVAC company in Utah with more than 250 reviews at 5.0 ranked only 10th at its own address. We traced it to a shared coworking address, switched it to a service area business with 20 towns and advised against opening a second profile that could risk a suspension.
A fence contractor in the Kansas City area had an active website and social pages but no presence on Google Maps among 129 competitors.

Every business and market is different. We do not promise rankings. We show you the same map every month so you can see what changed.
