When AI does the shopping: Claude, Manus and the new contractor shortlist

Some customers are not searching anymore. They are handing the search to an AI.

There is a newer kind of customer, and you may already have talked to one without knowing it. Before they ever called you, they asked an AI to do the homework: find three licensed electricians nearby, compare their reviews and tell me which one to call first.

Assistants like Anthropic's Claude can search the web and summarize what they find, with links back to the sources. Agent tools like Manus go a step further. You give them a task and they work through it on their own, visiting sites, comparing options and handing back a finished shortlist.

For the customer it saves an evening. For the business owner it changes the game, because the first round of judging now happens without a person looking at your website at all. Software decides whether you make the list of three.

These tools are careful by design. They prefer businesses they can confirm from more than one source. If your website shows one phone number, your Google listing shows another and a directory lists a business name you stopped using five years ago, an assistant has good reason to move on to a company with a cleaner record.

They also reward specifics. A website that states which services you offer, which towns you cover, whether you handle emergencies and what a customer should expect on the first visit gives Claude or Manus clear facts to put in front of the customer. Vague pages that only promise quality service give them nothing to repeat.

ChatGPT and Gemini work from many of the same signals, so the effort pays off across the board. The goal is not to please one tool. It is to leave a clear, consistent and well documented trail that any assistant can follow back to you.

Here is what that trail looks like. A complete Google Business Profile. Matching listings on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and the directories for your trade. A website with a page for each core service and the towns you serve. Clear answers to the questions customers ask before they hire. Recent reviews that mention the actual work.

None of it requires a special sign up with an AI company. It requires the kind of steady upkeep most owners mean to get to and never do, which is exactly why the businesses that handle it stand out.

Customers who hand their search to an AI tend to be ready to hire. When the assistant gives them a shortlist, they call down it. Being on that list is the whole game.

If you want to know whether AI assistants put your business on that list today, request our AI Visibility Audit. It comes at no cost, and it shows what AI assistants find about your business, who they name instead and what to fix first.
