What we found on real plumbing profiles

A plumbing company in New York City had its primary category set to heating contractor instead of plumber, and its listing showed as unclaimed.
An emergency plumbing company in metro Atlanta did not reach the top 20 at any of 49 points. Its listing appeared to be filed as a heating contractor, and an empty duplicate listing sat in another town.
A plumbing company in New Jersey with more than 1,400 reviews reached the top 3 at only 2 of 49 points.
A plumbing company in Idaho with more than 220 reviews reached the top 3 at just 1 of 49 points, while the map leader held 28.6% of the top spots.
A backflow testing company in Houston had no Google listing at all. A competitor with no reviews reached the top 3 at 12 of 49 points.

The problems we see most

  • A primary category that does not match the main service. For plumbers we often see heating contractor filed as the main category instead of plumber.
  • A pin in the wrong place, or a service area that does not match where the trucks go
  • Listings that were never claimed, or duplicate listings splitting the reviews
  • Empty services lists and descriptions that do not name the real towns
  • Lots of reviews on a profile whose setup is wrong, so the reviews cannot carry it

What we fix first

  1. We run a 49 point scan of the service area before we change anything.
  2. We check the primary category, services and description against the plumbers that win the map, and fix them after the owner approves.
  3. We check the pin or service area, so the profile ranks from the right place.
  4. We draft replies to every new review and publish one post a week with up to three photos, approved by the owner.
  5. We rescan the same 49 points every month, so the owner sees what moved.

How we measured

Each scan is a 7 by 7 grid of 49 points across the business's service area, searching its main keyword. A point counts as a win when the business is in the top 3 map results there. These are businesses we looked at as possible clients between September 8 and October 30, 2026, not a random sample. Client work is described without names because of mutual NDAs.

Common questions

Why do plumbers with lots of reviews miss the Google map?

Reviews help, but Google also weighs how well the profile matches the search and how close the business is to the searcher. A wrong category, a misplaced pin or an empty services list can keep a well reviewed profile out of the top 3.

What is the most common Google Maps problem for plumbers?

In our scans it is the setup: heating contractor filed as the main category instead of plumber, a pin or service area that does not match the work, and listings that were never claimed.

How do you scan a profile?

We search the business's main keyword from 49 points spread across its service area and record where it shows up at each point. Green means top 3, red means not. We rescan the same points every month for clients.

Can you show client names and numbers?

Our client work is covered by mutual NDAs, so we describe it without names. The scan numbers on this page come from businesses we looked at as possible clients.
