Google may remove posts that include unverified phone numbers or emails

Typing your number into a post used to be pointless. Now it can get the post removed.

Google help page update

What changed

Google updated two help pages about Business Profile posts. It now says it may remove posts with unverified contact information, which includes phone numbers, email addresses and social media handles typed into the post text. A second page says a post with a phone number in it might be rejected if the number cannot be verified as belonging to the business.

What it means for your business

A lot of owners end every post with "Call us at" and a number, sometimes a tracking number or a cell phone that is not on the profile. Those posts are now at risk of being pulled.

The fix is simple. Leave contact details out of the text and use the button Google gives you on every post, such as Call now, Book, Learn more or Order online. The button uses the verified information already on your profile, and it is easier for a customer to tap anyway.

What we do for clients

Every weekly post we write for a client uses a button for the call to action and keeps phone numbers, emails and social handles out of the text. Each post still goes to the owner for approval before it is published.
